degree–ismadequiteflat.
Werkmeister(WerkmeisterIII):Thisscalewasoneofthe
manytemperamentsystemsdevelopedtowardstheendof
theBaroqueperiod.These“Well‐Tempered”tuningswere
aimedatallowingrelativelyfreetransposition–although
you’llstillnoticethatthedif
ferentkeysmaintaintheirown
distinctcharacteristics,unlikeEqualTemperament.
J.S.Bachwasreferringtothesenewscalesinhistitle,“The
Well‐TemperedClavier.”Assuch,thisgroupareparticu‐
larlyappropriateforlatebaroqueorganandharpsichord
music.
