Parking Brake Switch
The parking brake switch is a normally open proximity
switch. The parking brake switch is attached to the bot-
tom of the brake pedal. The switch on machines with a
serial number below 310000000 is different than the
switch on machines with serial numbers above
310000000 but the switch function is the same.
Whentheparkingbrakeisnotapplied,theparkingbrake
detent is positioned near the target end of the parking
brake switch so the switch is closed. The parking brake
detent is moved away from the switch when the parking
brake is applied causing the switch to open.
Testing
1. Before testing the parking brake switch, the switch
and its circuit wiring should be tested as an ECM input
with the Diagnostic Display (see Diagnostic Display in
the Troubleshooting section of thischapter). If the Diag-
nostic Display verifies that the parkingbrake switch and
circuit wiring are functioning correctly, no further switch
testing is necessary. If the Diagnostic Display deter-
mines that the parking brake switch and circuit wiring
are not functioning correctly, proceed with testing pro-
cedure.
2. On machines with serial numbers below310000000
(Fig. 35), test parking brake switch as follows:
A. Make sure ignition switch is in the OFF position.
Disconnect the wire harness electrical connector
fromthe switch.Check thecontinuity oftheswitch by
connecting a multimeter (ohms setting) across the
switch connector terminals.
B. Thereshould becontinuity (closed)between the
switch terminals when the parking brake is released
(notapplied). Thereshould notbe continuity(open)
between the switch terminals when the parking
brake pedal is depressed (applied).
3. Onmachines with serialnumbers above310000000
(Fig. 36), test parking brake switch as follows:
A. Turn ignition switch to the ON position (do not
start engine)and check LED oncable end ofparking
brake switch. LED should be illuminated when the
parking brake is released (notapplied). LED should
not be illuminated when the parking brake pedal is
depressed (applied).
NOTE: Wheninstallingtheparkingbrakeswitchonma-
chines with serial numbers below 310000000, place
switch plate tab into switchmounting hole that isclosest
to target end of switch.
4. If parking brake switch is faulty, replace switch. Ad-
just switch after installation (see Parking Brake Switch
in the Adjustments section of this chapter).
5. If the parking brake switch tests correctly and a cir-
cuit problem still exists, check wire harness (see Wiring
Schematic and Circuit Drawings in Chapter 9 -- Electri-
cal Diagrams).
6. Make sure that wire harness electrical connector is
connected to the parking brake switch after testing.
