Figure 4.5.5_1 depicts the manufacturing trend to shift from part-to-tool
manufacturing to part-to-part manufacturing in order to save the non-recurring
and recurring costs of tooling. However, this approach requires tighter
tolerances and higher detail costs. In the example above, the part profile may
be stamped sheet metal, but the holes are put in using a more expensive
process to hold the tighter tolerances. There are multiple ways to
manufacture these details, but depending on the specific situation, the part
fabrication costs may exceed the benefit of eliminating the traditional
assembly tooling.
