GLOSSARY
Air time
Theamountofdivetimeremaining,basedonacalculationofcylinderpressure
and ambientpressure and present airconsumption.
Altitude dive
A divemade at an elevationgreater than 300m/1000 ft abovesea level.
Ascent rate
The speedat which the diverascends toward thesurface.
ASC RATE
Abbreviation forascent rate.
Ascent time
Theminimumamountoftimeneededtoreachthesurfaceonadecompression
stop dive.
ASC TIME
Abbreviation forascent time.
Ceiling
On a decompression stop dive, the shallowest depth to which a diver may
ascend basedon computed nitrogen load.
Ceiling zone
On a decompression stop dive, the zone between the ceiling and the ceiling
plus 1.8m/6 ft. Thisdepth range isdisplayed with twoarrows pointing toward
each other(the ”hour glass” icon).
Central nervoussystem toxicity
Toxicity caused by oxygen. Can cause a variety of neurological symptoms.
The mostimportant ofwhich isan epileptic-likeconvulsion whichcan causea
diver todrown.
CNS
Abbreviation forcentral nervous system toxicity.
CNS%
Central nervoussystem toxicitylimit fraction. Also noteOxygen LimitFraction
Compartment
See "Tissue group".
DAN
Abbreviation forDivers Alert Network.
DCI
Abbreviation fordecompression illness.
Decompression
Time spent at a decompression stop, or range, before surfacing, to allow
absorbed nitrogento escape naturally fromtissues
Decompression range
On a decompression stop dive, the depth range between the floor and the
ceiling withinwhich a diver muststop for sometime during ascent.
Decompression illness
Any of a variety of maladies resulting either directly or indirectly from the
formation of nitrogen bubbles in tissues or body fluids, as a result of
inadequatelycontrolleddecompression.Commonlycalled"thebends"or"DCI".
Dive series
A group of repetitive dives between which the dive computer indicates some
nitrogen loading is present. When nitrogen loading reaches zero the dive
computer deactivates.
Dive time
Elapsed time between leaving the surface to descend, and returning to the
surface atthe end of adive.
ΔP
Delta P, describing the Cylinder Pressuredrop during the dive; the difference
in cylinderpressure between the beginningand end ofa dive.
EAD
Abbreviation forequivalent air depth.
EAN
Abbreviation forenriched air nitrox.
Enriched airnitrox
Also called nitrox or Enriched Air = EANx. Air that has some oxygen added.
Standard mixesare EAN32(NOAA NitroxI = NNI) andEAN36 (NOAANitrox
II =NN II).
Equivalent airdepth
Nitrogen partialpressure equivalent table.
Floor
Thedeepestdepthduringa decompressionstopdiveatwhich decompression
takes place.
Half time
Aftera changeinambient pressure,theamount oftimerequired forthepartial
pressure of nitrogen in a theoretical compartment to go half way from its
previous valueto saturation at thenew ambient pressure.
HP
Abbreviation forhigh pressure (= cylinderpressure).
