The bike had been in the garage. I brought it in, cleaned it up, and rode it for 15 minutes with no problems. The next time I tried to ride it, I could hardly push the pedals because the tension or resistance was so strong. Since this bike is electromagnetic, the resistance is not adjustable until you ride for 5 seconds or so, so there is not normally resistance when you start either. Also, the resistance is as far down as it will go when the controls come on and there is no way to make an adjustment on the screen.
