won't display steps

for Accusplit Fitness Electronics 1590

I programmed my pedometer today to show time, stride, etc, but when I close it and walk with it, it doesn't show steps. It's a couple of years old but I would think that if the battery were down, it wouldn't hold time, etc. It's been in a drawer for awhile. Any ideas? Thanks.
