I put my Gold's Gym Stride Trainer 410 together. ...

I put my Gold's Gym Stride Trainer 410 together. As soon as I put the batteries in, it made a clicking noise and a whining that won't stop. I tried changing the resistance, but didn't notice a difference. I followed the directions as written and plugged the wires together as indicated.
